The brief
An irregular, cramped layout
The flat, in a 1980s building with a reinforced concrete column-and-slab structure, still had its original irregular and heavily partitioned layout. The brief was to make it more comfortable in terms of space.
The column structure allowed freedom to reconfigure, so we proposed a new plan designed around everyday use.

The living area
Bathroom and kitchen swap places
The kitchen joins an open-plan living-dining room.
The first decision was to swap the bathroom and kitchen: the kitchen joins the living-dining room to form a single open space, while the bathroom grows and now ventilates onto the inner courtyard. Access to the utility room moves to the single bedroom and the corridor is shortened to share its area among the other rooms.
Bedrooms and bathrooms
No more hallways
Every room opens onto the main space.
In the other part of the flat, the hallway leading to the two bedrooms and the second bathroom is removed. That bathroom grows and now serves only the main bedroom, while the other bedroom is enlarged into a double. Every room now opens onto the living-dining-kitchen space. All finishes and services are renewed.
