Structural strengthening in Barcelona

We calculate and design the strengthening of floors, beams, columns and foundations so the structure can adapt to new uses and extend its service life, and we supervise the works.

What it is

Adapting the structure to new needs and extending its life

A structural strengthening or alteration project is one in which the main part of the intervention is structural: opening a hole in a floor for a staircase, adding intermediate supports under beams that have deflected excessively, or strengthening a timber-beam ceiling with a concrete topping and connectors.

It enables the structure to take new layouts, loads or uses, and corrects damage that compromises its safety or durability.

When you need it

  • Beams or floors with deflection or cracks.
  • Timber beams damaged by damp or insects.
  • Corroded reinforcement in concrete elements.
  • A change of use that puts more load on the floors.
  • New openings in floors or walls.
  • Settlement or foundation problems.

Common cases

Each strengthening solution addresses a specific problem

There are many types of strengthening; we specify the one that ensures the building’s durability at the most efficient cost.

Timber floors

Concrete topping with connectors, replacement or strengthening of beams, and treatment of the timber.

Excessively deflected beams

Intermediate supports, steel sections or reinforcements that restore the beam’s capacity.

New openings

Openings in floors for staircases, lifts or lightwells, with the necessary trimmer beam and reinforcement.

Columns and foundations

Jacketing, underpinning and reinforcement for damaged columns or foundations with settlement.

How we work

From preliminary studies to the works

To intervene in a structure, you first need to know how it was built and what condition it is in.

1. Preliminary studies

We analyse the existing structure, open up test holes if necessary and identify the causes of the damage.

2. Project and calculations

We size the strengthening and define the construction work. The project is used to request quotes and apply for the building permit.

3. Site supervision

We follow the intervention on site and ensure it is carried out exactly as designed.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about structural strengthening

Cracks in ceilings and walls, sagging beams, sticking doors, persistent damp in timber beams or rust on reinforcement are warning signs. A building inspection will confirm it.

Yes. Any intervention on the structure requires a technical project with calculations, which is also used to request comparable quotes and apply for the building permit.

Yes. Depending on its condition, it can be strengthened with a concrete topping and connectors, individual beams can be reinforced or replaced, and the timber treated.

It depends on the type of element, its condition and the chosen solution. After the preliminary studies we give you a fixed quote for the project and site supervision, plus VAT.

It depends on the scope. With many localised strengthening works it is possible, with the appropriate safety measures. We assess it in the project.
