The brief
Adapting the layout to new needs
The flat, in a mid-1950s building with load-bearing masonry walls and one-way reinforced concrete slabs, still had its original layout. The client, a company, wanted to change the brief to suit today’s needs.
The key was to reduce the number of rooms so that those remaining are larger and more useful.

The layout
Fewer, larger rooms
One bedroom fewer, a bigger bathroom and kitchen.
One bedroom is removed to give space to another, which becomes a double, and to enlarge the bathroom, which previously had little more than 3 m². The second double bedroom stays as it was. Removing a partition lets the kitchen grow to more than 12 m², becoming the anteroom to the living-dining room.

A corridor that also stores
Wider, with wardrobes, and accessible.
The corridor is widened slightly to fit storage wardrobes while comfortably meeting accessibility requirements. The renovation includes a complete renewal of finishes and services, to the standard of a newly built home.
